Do I Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade? A Tacoma Electrician's Guide

The short answer: If your breakers trip often, your lights dim when a big appliance kicks on, you still have 100-amp service, or your panel says Federal Pacific or Zinsco on the label, it's probably time for an electrical panel upgrade. You will likely need one before making any upgrades to your home that require added power — things like adding an EV charger, hot tub, or whole-home generator. Here at 3 Bridges Electric in Tacoma, we're your trusted choice for panel upgrades throughout Pierce County, and most panel upgrades take a single day, roughly 4 to 8 hours.
The Night the Dryer and the Space Heater Disagreed
Here is a call we get a lot. It is a cold January evening. Someone is running the dryer, a space heater is going in the back bedroom, and the microwave starts. Click. Half the house goes dark. They reset the breaker, it happens again on Thursday, and eventually they call and ask, “Is this normal?”
One trip once in a while is normal. That is the breaker doing its job. A breaker that trips every week is your house telling you it is being asked to carry more than it was built for. The Consumer Product Safety Commission puts it plainly: when a breaker trips, “it is often a warning that the circuit is overloaded,” and you should find out why instead of just resetting it.
Why a Tripping Breaker is Something To Pay Attention To
Your panel is where power from Tacoma Public Utilities or Puget Sound Energy comes into your home and gets split into circuits. Each breaker watches one circuit and shuts it off before the wire gets dangerously hot. When the panel is too small or the breakers are worn out, that safety net gets thin.
The numbers back this up. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that from 2020 to 2024, US fire departments responded to an annual average of 46,652 home electrical structure fires, causing an estimated 527 civilian deaths and $2.4 billion in direct property damage each year. NFPA also found that 28 percent of those fires happened in January, February, or December. That lines up with what we see here: winter is when heaters, dryers, and ovens all run at once.
Five Signs It Is Time for a Panel Upgrade

- Breakers trip all the time. Sometimes the fix is a new circuit. Sometimes the whole panel is undersized. A quick visit tells you which.
- Lights dim or flicker when big appliances start. If the lights sag every time the furnace or dryer starts, your service may be struggling to keep up.
- You have 100-amp service or less. That can work for a small home with gas heat, but it gets tight fast once you add a heat pump, a hot tub, or an EV. Moving from 100 amps to 200 amps is one of the most common upgrades we do.
- Your panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco. These older brands are the ones electricians and home inspectors flag most. With Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers, CPSC testing confirmed that these breakers fail certain UL calibration test requirements — the tests that check whether a breaker trips when it should. The CPSC closed its 1983 investigation without making a determination as to the safety of FPE circuit breakers. Translation: nobody ever gave them a clean bill of health. If you see either name on your panel door, it is worth a call even if nothing seems wrong.
- The panel is warm, buzzing, rusty, or smells like burning. These are not “keep an eye on it” signs. Stay away from the panel, turn off the main breaker only if it is safe to do so, and call an electrician. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
Planning an EV Charger or a Generator? Start With the Panel
Before you buy either one, have an electrician run a load calculation. It shows whether your current panel has room or whether a 200-amp service upgrade should come first. Doing it in that order saves you from paying for two trips.
What Upgrade Day Looks Like
People expect this to be a week-long mess. It usually is not. Most of our panel upgrades are done in one day, roughly 4 to 8 hours. We coordinate the power disconnect with Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) or Puget Sound Energy (PSE), swap in a modern 200A or 400A panel with arc-fault and ground-fault protection, and reconnect and label your circuits.
Your power will be off for part of the day, so charge your phones and unplug anything sensitive the night before.
On cost, our site lists major electrical panel upgrades at $1,500 to $4,000, depending on the size and complexity of the job, and every job starts with a free, itemized estimate.
Your 5-Minute Panel Check for Tonight
Grab a flashlight and go look. No tools, no touching anything inside.
- Read the label. Does it say Federal Pacific, FPE, Stab-Lok, or Zinsco?
- Find the main breaker. Is it marked 100 or less?
- Look and sniff. Any rust, scorch marks, or a burning smell? Any buzzing?
- Feel the door with the back of your hand. Is it warm?
- Think back. Has a breaker tripped more than once this month, or are you planning an EV charger, hot tub, or generator this year?
If you answered yes to any of these, it is worth a professional look.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need an electrical panel upgrade?+
Common signs are breakers that trip often, lights that dim when large appliances start, a warm or buzzing panel, 100-amp or smaller service, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. Plans to add an EV charger, hot tub, or standby generator are another common reason.
How long does an electrical panel upgrade take in Tacoma?+
Most panel upgrades 3 Bridges Electric does are finished in a single day, roughly 4 to 8 hours, including coordinating the power disconnect with Tacoma Public Utilities or Puget Sound Energy.

Are Federal Pacific panels dangerous?+
CPSC testing confirmed that Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers fail certain UL calibration test requirements, and the CPSC closed its 1983 investigation without making a determination about their safety. Many electricians recommend replacing them.
Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?+
Not always. A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and adds a large load. A load calculation shows whether your current panel has room or whether a 200-amp service upgrade should come first.
